About Us

From a nanotechnology engineering research lab at the University of Waterloo to a global business in 10 years. Our mission is to leverage our patented technology to enable better sun safety protection.

Our Roots in Nanotechnology Engineering

It all began in 2014 when the original Spot My UV founders were nanotechnology engineering undergraduates at the University of Waterloo - an institution with a storied technology development history. The founders nanotechnology engineering research ultimately led them to the breakthrough development of Dermatrue and the birth of Spot My UV.

For 10 years we have passionately pursued our mission of leveraging real technology to help people in their daily lives. With the patented Dermatrue technology integrated into every Spot our users are able to have greater peace of mind while they are outside and exposed to potentially harmful UV rays. We love the outdoors and we want our customers to love it too. We focus every day on educating our customers about proactive sun safety and to bring to market a product with true technology differentiation at an affordable price point.

Spot My UV Detection Stickers are the ONLY 3 layer UV detection system of its kind in the world. There is no other UV sticker on the market that interacts with sunscreen like Spot My UV to help you know when to reapply. Whether you are at the beach, out for a run, or working in the garden on a sunny day our product is designed to leverage the patented Dermatrue Skin Mimicking Technology ™ to give you a real time view of your sunscreen protection.

Patented Dermatrue Skin Mimicking Technology

Spot My UV’s key technology component is its patented Dermatrue layer which is a novel material composition that accurately mimics skin’s interaction with sunscreen. The technology is activated by sunlight; there must be a powerful enough light source to change the colour. When both UV light and visible light are reaching the sticker - when there is no sunscreen applied - Spot My UV is purple. When appropriate levels of sunscreen are applied UV light is blocked from reaching the sticker and therefore only visible light reaches the sticker and the color changes to clear. Once sunscreen has worn off the sticker changes back to purple because UV light is once again reaching the sticker and triggering the color change.

Whereas certain of our competitors use thermally reversible photochromic compounds that are known for their instability towards prolonged UV radiation, Spot My UV contains purely photochromic components that circumvent thermal bleaching and are therefore more accurate and reliable. This gives our customers true feedback on their protection - from both UVA and UVB rays.

Proudly Made in the USA

We are based in Austin, Texas where we know a thing or two about the sunshine. We are proud to call Austin home and love being outside all year round. Our product is assembled and packed in Austin and manufactured in upstate New York at a leading healthcare and life science solutions advanced manufacturing facility that has been in business for over 100 years. We could lower our cost of production by moving to overseas partners but it is important to us to bring our customers a product proudly made in the USA.

Rigorously Developed and Clinically Tested

We were founded over 10 years ago and in our history we have performed four clinical trials, 10 safety tests, and have been tested by dermatologists and pediatricians and are Prop 65 compliant. We want you to have confidence that you are purchasing a quality product with the certifications to back it up.
